Testing

Monitor and manage live and automated testing.

Overview

Device Farm tracks two types of testing: Live Testing started from the Devices page, and Automated Testing via Appium/WebDriver scripts. Each type has its own dedicated page for monitoring and management.

Test Types

Live Testing

Interactive testing started by clicking "Start Testing" on a device. Full control with video streaming, touch input, and toolbar actions.

  • Real-time video streaming
  • Touch and gesture control
  • App installation & file transfer
  • Screenshot & recording capture

Automated Testing

Testing via Appium or WebDriver API. View device screen and track test execution progress.

  • Appium/WebDriver compatible
  • Live test progress tracking
  • Activity timeline logging
  • CI/CD integration support

Test Status

Tests go through the following lifecycle states:

StatusIndicatorDescription
Active🟢 GreenTest is running. Device is streaming and accepting commands.
Completed⚫ GrayTest ended normally by user or automation script. Artifacts are available.
Failed🔴 RedTest terminated due to error, timeout, or device disconnection. Error in logs.

Live Testing Page

The Live Testing page (/devicer/live-testing) shows all live tests with filtering and search.

Statistics Cards

At the top, view quick stats: Total Tests, Active, Completed, and Failed counts.

Filter Tabs

TabDescription
AllAll live tests
ActiveCurrently running tests
CompletedSuccessfully ended tests
FailedTests that ended in error

Search by test name, device name, user, or ID.

Test Actions

  • View Details - Open test detail page
  • End Test - Terminate active test
  • View Artifacts - Screenshots, recordings, logs

Automated Testing Page

The Automated Testing page (/devicer/automated-testing) shows tests created via Appium/WebDriver API.

Test Progress Tracking

Each test card shows live test execution progress if your test framework is integrated with the Test Event API.

Device Filter

Filter tests by specific device to monitor test runs across your device fleet.

Test Details

Click any test to view device screen, activity timeline, and test results in real-time.

tip

Integrate your test framework with the Test Event API to see live pass/fail results. See Test Event Integration for details.

See Appium Config for detailed automation setup instructions with code examples.

Best Practices

End Tests When Done

Always end your test when finished to release the device for others. Idle tests timeout automatically after the configured period.

Use Meaningful Test Names

For automated tests, set a descriptive test name in capabilities to easily identify test runs later.

Monitor Long-Running Tests

Keep the Automated Testing page open during test runs to catch failures early. Use parallel mode to monitor multiple devices simultaneously.

Troubleshooting

IssueSolution
Test not showingCheck the correct tab (Live/Automated). Try refreshing the page.
No active testsStart a test from the Devices page or via Appium API.
